Napoli on brink of deal for Liverpool's Lucas

Lucas Leiva

After weeks of negotiations, Napoli could agree a deal for Liverpool defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva by the end of the week.

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has been trying to lure Lucas Leiva for a while and he may be about to land the Brazilian international.

Lucas seems to be ready to quit Anfield after becoming somewhat surplus to requirements but the most likely option is a loan.

Last season was a success for Napoli, who finished third in Serie A and lifted the Italian Cup, but they sometimes looked exposed at the back by the lack of a strong holding midfielder.

Benitez has set his sights on Lucas and Napoli have gradually edged closer to a deal, which Italian sources believe could be completed this week.

Reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that Napoli and Liverpool have reached an agreement for a paid loan.

Napoli would pay £1.4 million for the services of Lucas for a year and would have the option to make the transfer permanent for just under £8 million.

Benitez is said to be keen to close out a deal as soon as possible and Lucas will probably be looking to sort out his position to avoid being left in limbo at Liverpool.
