Pardew calls for Newcastle to kick-start their season

Alan Pardew called for his Newcastle United side to use their 1-0 win over Gillingham on Tuesday as the catalyst to kick-start their Premier League season.

The Magpies have taken just one point from their first two games as their 2-0 opening-weekend defeat to champions Manchester City at St James' Park was followed up with a 0-0 draw away to Aston Villa.

Pardew's side have played reasonably well in both games so far, and are perhaps unfortunate not to have more points on the board at this early stage.

However, they gained their first victory of the campaign when they squeezed past Gillingham in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday, thanks to John Egan's own goal.

The scrappy victory should be the springboard for Newcastle to push on and take the three points against Crystal Palace at home on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Pardew said: “We’ve shown really solid team performances in the three games, without really getting the breaks in front of goal."

"There were so many times tonight when we had breaks and could have got a second or third goal. It didn’t happen."

“I am hoping on Saturday that we can get a break. It would be nice to score two or more goals on Saturday. The way Palace play and the way they are quick on the break you sense there is a possibility they could score."

“It might mean we do need two or three so that’s what our focus must be.”

It was hardly a vintage display from a team that featured the likes of Fabricio Coloccini, Daryl Jamnaat, Gabriel Obertan, Moussa Sissoko and Siem de Jong, but the win was all that mattered at Priestfield.

Now the task for Magpies is to claim the scalp of the manager-less Palace when the Eagles visit the North East this weekend.
