Manchester United could make a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic who is down the pecking order at BVB.
Before Manchester United fell to a 4-0 defeat away at the MK Dons in the League Cup, a central defender who has been linked with an Old Trafford move started in a low profile friendly.
Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic was used by Jurgen Klopp for a practice match against SV Waldhof Mannheim, which BVB unsurprisingly won 4-0.
Subotic was an unused substitute in last weekend’s opening Bundesliga defeat for Dortmund against Bayer Leverkusen and there could be grounds for United to make an offer for the Serbian before this Monday’s transfer deadline.
Klopp showed his hand last weekend when he confined Subotic to the bench, seemingly preferring a combination of other players with BVB’s centre-back pairing this season likely to be Matthias Ginter and Mats Hummels.
Subotic’s contract is also interesting because it expires in 2016, which suggests BVB could be tempted into doing business should United, or any other side, make a late offer which grabs BVB’s attention.
The problem with going after players now is that the top European clubs will hold United to ransom.
The Old Trafford club have flexed their financial muscles and with time running out in the transfer window, any club looking to buy a player has far less bargaining room than if they moved at the start of the window.
United were strongly linked with Thomas Vermaelen earlier in the summer before Arsenal sold him to Barcelona and no other realistic targets have emerged despite the fact Louis van Gaal could do with improving his team’s back three.
Hummels was another option but Klopp showed his hand over the German’s future when he made him the side’s next captain as Seb Kehl gave up the role ahead of his final season.
Subotic fits the bill in so many ways and he’s well suited to playing in the middle of a three man defence.
The two obstacles should United go after him are negotiations and the pressure of the transfer window equipped with no Champions League football. However, that didn’t matter for Angel Di Maria.
Do you think subotic is worth a late bid for Manchester United?
