He is no longer needed at Rennes and now Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik is currently training with West Ham United.

It is being reported by various sources in both the French and English media that Premier League side West Ham United are in talks to sign central defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais.

The 25-year-old French-born defender has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Breton club, he has fallen out with Coach Philippe Montanier and has been training with the Rennes reserves in recent weeks, and the club are looking to move on the defender for around €2.5 million.

The player has travelled to London this week and it has been reported that he has joined training with the club in order to win himself a deal.

Here are five facts about the newest West Ham United target:

  • Kana-Biyik was born in Metz in the east of France, but after making five appearances for the France under-21 side, even popping up with a goal, he decided to make himself available for Cameroon and has since made five appearances over two years.
  • Rennes purchased Kana-Biyik from Ligue 2 side Le Havre in 2010 and the defender has since played 113 top-flight games for Rennes and has been a major part of the defence in Brittany since his move.
  • The defender has a famous father. André Kana-Biyik was part of the Cameroon side that famously beat Argentina during the opening game of the 1990 World Cup and it was the older Kana-Biyik that picked up the red card during the match. He also played in the 1994 World Cup.
  • Kana-Biyik has built his career on being a no-nonsense, commanding and very physical central defender. He has received one red card in each of his last five club seasons, but has never received more than 6 yellow cards in a single season.
  • Last season he scored one goal during his 21 appearances, but it sums up all he gives as a player. The corner was swung in from the right, Kana-Biyik won the first header, it was half cleared and the defender showed his determination to win the third header and power it into the net.
