Costa's injury - A push for Chelsea to do some late transfer business?

Jose Mourinho Chelsea

Chelsea could be pushed back into the transfer market following an injury to Diego Costa.

Chelsea have been handed a hammer blow with the news that Diego Costa could be missing for up to six weeks with a hamstring problem.

The Blues forward has been in good form at the start of this season but he pulled up in training with a problem, which has been following him around since the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season.

Costa battled on over the last chunk of last season with a hamstring problem, which saw him dragged off after eight minutes of the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

Those persistent problems were put down to an eagerness from Diego Simeone to rush the forward back into action and Chelsea must resist making the same mistake as the striker recovers.

Fortunately for the Blues, Jose Mourinho secured return of club legend Didier Drogba earlier in the transfer window but with Fernando Torres tipped to leave the club, the Portuguese coach could be forced to dip back into the transfer market.

Should Torres complete an exit, then Drogba will be left as the only fit forward at the club while Costa recovers.

The strain is reduced by the fact Chelsea only play with one striker but increased because of Drogba’s age and the fact Chelsea will soon reach a point where they are playing weekend and mid-week games regularly.

Andre Schurrle also has experience of playing as a centre forward but he’s been at his most effective for the Blues in wider positions as he showed in the win at Burnley earlier this month.

So what are Mourinho’s options if he goes back into the transfer market?

A loan deal for a temporary striker is an option because it can be difficult for clubs to do big money deals late in the transfer window.

There have been reports suggesting the Blues have been monitoring other strikers like Mattia Destro at Roma, with some stories even suggesting talks are under way which could now intensify in light of this injury.

It will be interesting to see how Mourinho reacts up until Monday night’s deadline.
