There has been a lot of activity this season as Liverpool look to build on last season's unexpected second-place finish.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson says the side haven't put any extra pressure on themselves this season after a busy summer transfer window.

The Reds have signed nine players as they look to build a team capable of competing on all four fronts this season but Johnson has said the squad is a lot stronger than the previous campaign despite the loss of Luis Suarez.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I don’t know what the expectation levels are outside the club but as players we certainly haven’t put any extra pressure on ourselves this season. We know how well we can play when we put it all together.

“The squad is definitely a lot stronger than it was. Now we’ve got players who can come off the bench and help the team.

“It’s not just the 11 starting the game that wins games, you need 14. It’s about squad performances.

“The manager wants competition for every position and you need that if you are going to compete in every competition this season."

After last season's unexpected title challenge, the expectations have risen significantly this season. However the players are likely to take time to bed in and as a result the Reds may start a little slower than they did last term, but the aim is for the club to at least consolidate their position in the Champions League places - whilst manager Brendan Rodgers has said he wants to win a trophy in his third season in charge at the club.

There is certainly the squad depth of a side that can compete with multiple injuries and still put out a side that other clubs would perhaps feel envious of.
