Manchester United close to selling playmaker back to former club - for just £10m

Kagawa

According to reports tonight, Manchester United are close to selling Shinji Kagawa back to Borussia Dortmund in a £10m deal.

United have so far struggled under Louis van Gaal this season, losing to Swansea City on the opening day before a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday. The misery was compounded by a shock 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup, leaving van Gaal with work to do in the transfer market.

The Dutchman landed Angel Di Maria in a £60m deal this week, and the arrival of the Real Madrid star could lead to some departures, with Tom Cleverley potentially on his way to Aston Villa in an £8m deal.

And now, Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa also looks set to leave the club for £10m, heading back to former club Borussia Dortmund - according to transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio.

The move comes just days after van Gaal publicly criticised Kagawa for not understanding the new system in place at Old Trafford.

"Kagawa did not wish to fulfil my wishes, my philosophy when I played him in the United States. "Kagawa was a No.10 at [Borussia] Dortmund but I want to try him at No. 6 and No. 8."

It therefore comes as little surprise to see United cashing in on the 25-year-old, and it's even less of a surprise to see him heading back to Signal Iduna Park, where he scored 29 goals in 71 games. Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp admitted last season that the way United misused Kagawa made him upset - which makes a return so perfect for Kagawa.

"Shinji Kagawa is one of the best players in the world and he now plays 20 minutes at Manchester United - on the left wing! My heart breaks. Really, I have tears in my eyes. Central midfield is Shinji's best role. He's an offensive midfielder with one of the best noses for goal I ever saw."

Kagawa's time at United has been one of frustration, scoring just six goals in 56 games under both Sir Alex Ferguson and then David Moyes. The deal is believed to be worth £10m in total, with an initial £8m with £2m in add-ons - some way off the £17m that United paid in total for Kagawa back in 2012.
