On this day: Ozil wanted Madrid stay, Chelsea finalise £32m deal and Baines debacle

Mesut Ozil 2

On the 28th August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 28th August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 28th August 2013…

Mesut No-zil

A year ago today and it looked as though Arsenal had missed out in their pursuit of Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil. The German international was being linked with a move to The Gunners, as Real looked to move players on in order to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur.

But Ozil said he had no desire to leave Real Madrid this time last year, stating:

"I have a contract with Real Madrid and I am staying here. I want to be successful. A lot has been written in the media about other teams but I have the coach's confidence and I feel very good. Also, I have a contract until 2016. I have a very good understanding with all my team-mates and it is a pleasure and an honour to play for Real Madrid."

Just a few days later he was forced out of the club, joining Arsenal for a club record fee.

Willi-In

Chelsea completed their protracted deal for Brazilian international Willian a year ago today. The talented attacker joined for a massive fee of £32 million after a weeks long debacle involving Tottenham's botched medical for the player.

They made their interest public and Chelsea dived in to snap him up from underneath their nose. Willian said of the deal:

"I'm very happy to be here, it's been a dream of mine to come and play here. Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world, and now I'm going to play for one of the best managers in the world, so I'm very happy and looking forward to it."

Leighton Baines reportedly told Everton to let him join Manchester United a year ago today. David Moyes was desperate to reunite with the player at Old Trafford - and had already seen one bid for his services rejected.

However Everton stood their ground, denying Baines had made such a request, and a year down the line the England international is talking about staying with The Toffees for the rest of his career.

Is Ozil's heart still in Madrid?
