Report - Chelsea linked Arbeloa wants another season at the Bernabeu

Stamford Bridge Inside

Chelsea could struggle if they are planning a late swoop for Alvaro Arbeloa of Real Madrid.

Spanish website Marca has some bad news for Chelsea if reports that they’re interested in signing Alvaro Arbeloa from Real Madrid are accurate.

Marca claims that the Spaniard is not going to leave Los Blancos as he’s determined to grit it out at the club and fight for his place for at least another season.

“He has no intention of letting up in his fight to play for Real Madrid. Arbeloa will be back, more determined than ever,” reports Marca.

“The player set his mind on sticking with Ancelotti a long time ago, at least for one more season. He has received some good offers to leave, but his heart lies with Real and he wants to make the most of his time as one of the 'Los Blancos'.”

The news shouldn’t be considered a massive blow to Chelsea because they already have several decent options down either side of their defence.

The reports of Chelsea’s interest seem to be born out of two factors.

Firstly, Arbeloa is thought to still have a very good relationship with Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho used him extensively while he was the manager of Real Madrid and there were never any reports of friction between the player and the boss.

Secondly, he’s an extremely versatile player who is capable of playing down either side of a back four.

Arbeloa is at his best when he’s played off of the right hand side but in similar fashion to Cesar Azpilicueta, he’s professional and works hard when he’s asked to play on his unnatural side of the pitch.

The 31-year-old’s contract expires in 2016 so it’s no surprise there has been some speculation over his future.

However, the pro-Real Madrid news source suggests that he’s determined to try and earn himself a new deal at the club so if there’s any move from Chelsea, it’s unlikely to be until this time next year.

Do Chelsea need another player like Arbeloa or is there enough defensive cover?
