Spanish press clarify Barcelona midfielder to Liverpool transfer news

Camp Nou

Former Arsenal star Alex Song is reportedly wanted by Liverpool, but the Camp Nou club will not accept the deal the Reds are offering - why?

"Liverpool are still pushing for Alex Song," according to a headline published by Sport.

Having already acquired polarising striker Mario Balotelli at the tail-end of the 2014 summer transfer window, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers still has time to complete further business in the market - and Song "has become a priority".

The Cameroon ace, a former star at Arsenal so he has an abundance of proven Premier League experience, is surplus to requirements at Camp Nou and is reportedly available for £10 million.

However, with a £115 million transfer expenditure part-funded by the £65 million sale of Luis Suarez to Barca, the club may be loathe to continue an aggressive recruitment drive.

This could explain Liverpool's offer - a one-year loan deal, thus relieving Song from Barcelona's wage bill - with an option to buy at the end of the duration of the loan.

Such a move does not interest the Blaugrana, who retain hope in striking a cash deal.
