Tottenham star nearing Bundesliga return after Hamburg meeting

Lewis Holtby

Lewis Holtby could be heading back to Germany after a report claimed that the player had met with a key representative from Hamburg SV.

Lewis Holtby’s troubled spell in the Premier League with Tottenham could soon be coming to an end amid reports suggesting that there has been progress in negotiations between Spurs and Bundesliga side Hamburg SV.

According to a report from German newspaper the Hamburger Morgenpost, the player has met with HSV club director Dietmar Beiersdorf to discuss a potential return to the league where he first made his name.

The report comes just a day after it was revealed that the Bundesliga side was keen on recruiting the 23-year-old, who has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Tottenham first-team.

Holtby the second half of last season on loan at Fulham but couldn’t prevent the Cottagers from slipping down into the Championship under Felix Magath.

Last month he was also linked with a move to fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, with reports claiming that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had even offered the player to the fellow London club.

Under contract at White Hart Lane until 2018, it is thought that Hamburg will look to recruit the midfielder on an initial season long loan, which could turn into a permanent switch should he thrive back in the Bundesliga.

Previously on the books at Schalke, Holtby first caught the eye during a loan spell at Mainz before returning to the Gelsenkirchen and earning a regular starting place.

Having already been set to sign for Spurs on a free in the summer of 2013, Holtby moved to north London in January for a nominal €1.75 million fee.

Capped three times for Germany, a loss of form last term ultimately contributed to the midfielder failing to force his way in Joachim Loew’s plans for the national team.

A return to the Bundesliga with Hamburg, however, could see those prospects improve.
