Outlast is always a matter of controversy since it is recognized and acknowledged among many horror fans as one of the best, if not the best horror game so far. It is also a very unique experience due to its inclusion of themes such as necrophilia, mass murder, gore, dismemberment and nudity which not only perfectly compliment the context, but elevate the realism of the experience.
The morbid feeling of creeping your way through the halls of a psychiatric hospital with psychotic killers of all sorts lurking in the shadows creates quite the perfect atmosphere for a horror game. This is further emphasized by your vulnerability as a character - you have only a camera with night vision to navigate your way through the darkness and to make things much worse, you have to conserve your camera's battery life since for a camera it is incredibly short, we are literally talking about less than 4 minutes. In addition to this, you are not able to fight off any of your enemies leaving you running and hiding throughout the game, often in pitch black. There is no going in guns blazing and shooting or fighting your way through this game. You can even pick up the new "whistleblower" DLC to get even more out of this fantastic horror game.
The Evil Within
The Evil Within is a terrifying installment to the horror franchise similar in tone to Silent Hill and the original Resident Evil games, not to mention that it is created by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil game series. The Evil Within takes you from the depths of an asylum to the land of the dead, and whether you are actually exploring alternate dimensions or not is beyond your knowledge, as this is a fusion of both physical and psychological horror; an asylum seems like the fitting location.
Luckily you will be able to fight your way through this one on certain occasions, but like the batteries on outlast, you will have to conserve your ammo, do not expect to be able to kill everything either. Expect to run and hide frequently, stealth will sometimes be required.
Silent Hills is the next installment for Silent Hill and features the one and only Norman Reedus - who many of you will know as Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead - as the protagonist of the game. That aside, the game was revealed through a sightly mysterious playable teaser called P.T, a playable teaser which actually has nothing to do with the game whatsoever. P.T is a very creepy, confusing and foreboding experience and sets you trekking across a repeating series of the same room in exactly the same house, only things are a little different and gradually more terrifying each time you progress. While the playable teaser is not a representation of the final game, it offers a rough idea of the type of atmosphere players will experience in the final game - and its a very frightening atmosphere.
