Spurs deal for Fazio still not completed, says Sevilla president

White Hart Lane 6

Federico Fazio's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur is still not finished according to the Sevilla president.

Sevilla president Jose Castro insists that Federico Fazio’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur should not have been announced as he is still contracted to the Spanish club.

The €10 million signing was announced by Spurs this week, but Castro has revealed that he believes that the deal is still not concluded.

The president of the La Liga side says that Spurs still have not transferred the money to his side and, as a result, Sevilla have not ended his contract.

"As of today Fazio is [still] a Sevilla player, because he still has a contract with Sevilla which has not been rescinded," he said to the Spanish media. "The money has been deposited, but not in the club's coffers."

"I do not know what he is doing in England being presented, that is what I cannot understand, but for that we have a legal team who will study what they must do. It is not a satisfactory or desired departure. Tottenham have paid his clause, but he only goes when his contract has been rescinded."

Fazio has already been through the usual protocol upon signing at White Hart Lane – doing interviews and photos at his new club.

However, although the deal is still expected to go through, the transfer has taken a rather odd twist today.

Fazio has watched his Spurs teammates in action already and was likely to have been impressed with what he saw.

Spurs took apart AEL Limassol in a 3-0 win to secure their place in this season’s Europa League, with Fazio presented to supporters, apparently prematurely, before kick-off.

The robust centre-back is expected to be one of Maurico Pochettino’s key players this season and is widely regarded as one of the bargain buys of the summer.

Fazio has established himself as one of the top defenders in Spain and will now be looking to have a similar impact in his new surroundings.

He joins Spurs to try and solve their problems at centre half, with Michael Dawson moving to Hull City as a the result of his arrival.
