Hodgson hints that he spoke to £30m United star about fitness problems

Roy Hodgson says that he knew all about Manchester United summer signing Luke Shaw's apparent fitness problems.

Roy Hodgson has said that he had spoken to Luke Shaw about his apparent fitness problems at the World Cup.

Louis Van Gaal commented over pre-season that his £30 million summer recruit was not fit enough to play for United and it appears that it was a problem which was already evident to the 19-year-old's national manager, Hodgson.

Shaw was selected as part of the 23 man England squad which disappointed in Brazil and the Three Lions manager has revealed that he had pointed out his fitness concerns around Shaw to him at the international tournament.

“He [Shaw] might have had it mentioned to him a couple of times during the World Cup when we were together by people like myself and [physiotherapist] Gary Lewin,” he said.

“So I think he’s been aware of it, Luke, and he will get fitter and stronger, not least of all because he’s still a very young man and his body has not yet reached its proper proportions for the level he wants to play at.”

Shaw was handed a specialist fitness programme by United to train with over the summer, but he has had complications.

A hamstring injury has ruled him out of contention for the Red Devil’s start to the season and the club will be hoping that their £30 million signing from Southampton is available for selection soon.

Van Gaal has utilised a 3-4-1-2 system in his opening period at the club and Shaw will be a pivotal player as the club look to adapt to the new formation.

The side have struggled with the adjustment so far and are yet to win a game with many positions within the formation being particularly speciailist.

The left-wing-back role is one of these and Shaw’s fitness woes are naturally a concern as it is a physically demanding position.

Despite these much publicised worries over his stamina issues, they were not evident in his breakthrough season last year.

With Southampton Shaw was relentless in his running at full-back and he will be hoping to show that sort of form when he does return to first-team action for United.
