Arsenal received a big blow last weekend when just moments after scoring a last minute equaliser against Everton their lead striker suffered an injury whilst blocking a Sylvain Distin clearance. Olivier Giroud did not know it at the time, but he had suffered a fracture at the base of his tibia that required surgery.
The French international is now expected to be out of action until January and much debate has begun over whether Arsenal need to move on a new striker before the Transfer Window slams shut on Monday night.
Plenty of names have been mentioned, from the sublime in Edinson Cavani to the ridiculous Nikola Zigic rumours.
But it is looking like Arsene Wenger is ready to stick with what he has for now. He has mentioned the club already have the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Joel Campbell, Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Yaya Sanogo who can all play up front - but these players are either out of position through the middle or not exactly formidable enough to send shivers down the spines of their Premier League rivals.
That is at least the belief of Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United man Gary Neville. He believes Arsenal must sign new striker this summer, or they have absolutely no chance of winning the Premier League title.
“We thought even before Giroud got injured that Arsene Wenger would want to sign a top centre forward. If we’re judging them on getting third or fourth place, then Arsenal might not have a problem. But if we’re judging them in terms of targeting a title, which I think is where Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans are at, then they’re going to have to sign a centre forward...
“You have to say it’s potentially something that could cause them problems – and if you’re measuring them against Man City with Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, Arsenal start to look very light.”
Neville seemingly echoing the sentiments of most pundits and fans, but not supposedly those of Arsene Wenger himself, the only person who's opinion matters in this case.
Will Arsenal survive without another striker?
