Richard Keys: This could be Louis van Gaal’s ‘greatest weakness’

Louis Van Gaal

Renowned sports presenter Richard Keys has his say on Manchester United’s disappointing start to the season under manager Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is a man with a strong personality and self-conviction. Even when his team have lost and dropped points, the Dutchman has maintained that they will eventually come good.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has spoken of his ‘philosophy’ during his press conferences, and has insisted that United will start to get the results sooner rather than later.

The fans and the media alike have been taken in by Van Gaal’s self-confidence and how much he believes in his own system. But one renowned sports presenter believes that that could come back to haunt the 63-year-old.

‘I must admit I'm a little surprised that Van Gaal has had such a poor start and I like to think he'll eventually turn it round’, former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys wrote on his personal website.

‘But a word of warning - his 'self belief' can be his greatest strength. But it might also prove to be his greatest weakness’.

Van Gaal has often been termed as ‘arrogant’, and his departures from Barcelona and Bayern have been messy. The former Netherlands national team coach has achieved success due to his ‘arrogance’, but that has been his downfall on more than one occasion.

After just three competitive matches, questions have been raised on whether Van Gaal’s new 3-5-2 system is suited for the players that he has. Despite all his pedigree, he has managed to sign just one truly world-class player (Angel di Maria) - that too because his club (Real Madrid) wanted to sell him.

No one can doubt the greatness of Van Gaal as a coach, but things are not looking as rosy at Old Trafford at the moment as United fans would have wanted to. Of course, this is just the start of the season, but the Red Devils have already dropped five points in the race for the Premier League top four.
