Spanish paper backs Liverpool to compete in 'easy' group for Real Madrid

Real Madrid have been handed an easy ride in Liverpool's Champions League group according to one Spanish paper.

Catalan based newspaper Mundo Deportivo has described Liverpool’s Champions League group as ‘very easy for Real Madrid’.

Brendan Rodgers couldn’t have hoped for a better draw, other than facing Real, when the teams came out of the hat yesterday afternoon but it’s clear who the Catalan press think is going to win Group B.

“Liverpool are the only real rival to Real Madrid in the Champions League Group B,” reports MD.

“Real Madrid have had much luck – the other two teams should not present any problems for Real Madrid or Liverpool.”

Real Madrid are of course the defending champions and will be the favourites to win the group.

However, Liverpool will back themselves to secure three wins in front of their own fans at Anfield because of the intimidating European atmosphere, but how they’ll get on away from home is more difficult to gauge.

The Reds won’t care one bit but they have to be wary over aiming for just second place.

If Liverpool could potentially win the group then it will give them a more favourable last 16 tie and once the knock out rounds get under way, anything can happen.

The apparent bad feeling from MD, a pro-Barcelona newspaper, appears to come from the fact that Barca were handed a much more difficult group than their main Spanish rivals.

Barca are in a group with PSG and Ajax, two very strong teams and two teams who will be trying to win the group and not just qualifying in second place.

This is a competition where Barcelona have been trying to reel in Real Madrid’s European Cup record for years so it’s no surprise that cheap shots are already being exchanged in different parts of the Spanish press.
