Stan Collymore identifies dark horses of City's Champions League group

Etihad Stadium

Bayern Munich are almighty in the Bundesliga and in Europe, while Manchester City are an emerging force - but what about AS Roma?

While much of the Group E focus will naturally be on the chances of Bayern Munich and Manchester City, both of whom have enriched squads, little has been mentioned about the fully competent Serie A representative AS Roma.

For Stan Collymore, City are very much embroiled in a "group of death" which Bayern Munich will "win convincingly".

Also vying for progression into the latter rounds in Group E are CSKA Moscow - with Russia never being a comfortable venue to compete in for away teams - and AS Roma, who Collymore identifies as a potentially clippable hurdle.

"Bayern will be stung by last year's disappointment and ready to unleash hell," he said in his Bleacher Report column. "They'll win this group of death convincingly."

Roma finished second in Serie A last season, 17 points adrift of champions Juventus but a comofrtable seven ahead of third-ranked Napoli.

Collymore added: "Roma are looking very good. They've recruited well, and they play an expansive style which will win over the neutrals this season.

"That said, I think City will just pip them to second. They remain susceptible against the best opponents, and are still early in their Champions League evolution, but they'll reach the knockout stage."
