Stan Collymore on why Arsenal will struggle to challenge in Europe

Arsenal's group fate has been decided but unless two problem areas are amended, they will not sustain a Champions League challenge.

Arsenal are faced with tricky opposition in the group stage of the Champions League as, earlier this week, the Gunners were drawn into Group D; which also contains Turkish giants Galatasaray, RSC Anderlecht and familiar opposition in Borussia Dortmund.

Regardless of whether they progress from the mini-league phase into the knockout rounds, Bleacher Report columnist Stan Collymore cannot foresee the club reaching the latter stages as manager Arsene Wenger has still failed to remedy two glaring problem areas.

Arsenal have, to date, bought well in the summer transfer market.

The marquee recruitment of Alexis Sanchez is a real coup that considerably bolsters their attacking options, while Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers have also all been added.

Even though Arsenal have oft competed against Dortmund, Collymore believes they may find it easier this season as they are an improved outfit. In contrast, BvB have lost who was arguably their top player in Robert Lewandowski, who joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer. Dortmund's transfer policy has seen them sign Ciro Immobile, but it is debatable whether the Italian will be able to emulate his predecessor.

"It's Dortmund again for Arsenal, but I think the Gunners are better set with attacking options this season having added Alexis Sanchez," he said.

"They are still a worry defensively, however, and lack the enforcer you need to win the Premier League and challenge in Europe."

Wenger has been linked with a number of defensive options including Toby Alderweireld, William Carvalho, Luiz Gustavo, Cheick Tiote and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but the French coach is yet to make an official bid for one of the five players he has most been associated with in recent weeks.
