Stan Collymore: This team to make it difficult for Liverpool - not just Real

FC Basel

Liverpool have been grouped into a Champions League mini-division along with Real Madrid, FC Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad.

It is not just Real Madrid who pose a Champions League group stage threat to Liverpool.

While the Reds are also tasked with taking on the apparent minnows in terms of grand stage European football, Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria, Brendan Rodgers will have to engineer a way of taking four points from FC Basel in order to give themselves the best chance of progression into the knockout stage.

To do so, may seem easier on paper than it is on the field as Basel "made things difficult for Chelsea last season" as they took six points off the Stamford Bridge side, defeating them 2-1 in London ahead of a 1-0 win in Switzerland.

While Basel finished in third place in their group, they won their first two knockout rounds of Europa League competition and finished as quarter-finalists after a 5-3 aggregate loss to Valencia.

"The key for Liverpool is taking four points or more from the two games against Basel, who made things difficult for Chelsea last season," wrote Collymore. If they do that, they'll go through second."

He continued: "It's great to see Liverpool back on the biggest stage. I've played on European nights at Anfield, and it's very special indeed.

"Holders Real Madrid are my outstanding favourites. They'll go through as winners, with the likes of Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Co. just too good to be stopped.

"They'll win the group comfortably."
