Neither Burnley nor Manchester United have recorded a victory yet this season, with both sides going out of the League Cup in mid-week. But while the home side will see a point or three as a huge boost in their attempt to solidify their position as a Premier League team, the latter simply cannot afford to drop more points.
The British-record signing of Angel Di Maria has certainly raised expectations at Old Trafford. But the same happened following Juan Mata’s then-club-record arrival back in January and we all know what happened next.
In short, one player – no matter how great – will solve United’s problems, and new midfielders and defenders are required before the transfer window slams shut. For now, Louis van Gaal and Sean Dyche have to make do with the players already at their disposal, and it will be interesting to see how both sides approach this match.
Burnley will know that if they take the lead, the jitters could begin for United. But contrastingly van Gaal’s side will know that if they can race into a good lead they could finally silence the doubters…at least for now.
