Ronaldo Strikes

Former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo reveals the only coach he holds a friendship with.

After winning the award as Europe’s best player, former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo revealed that he only struck up a friendship with one coach.

The Portuguese winger has played under a number of managers during his glittering career, including Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and renowned Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari.

One coach, however, always receives the highest of praise from the Real Madrid superstar and that is former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Out of all the coaches I worked under, the only friendship I have is with [Sir Alex] Ferguson – no one else... I worked under Pellegrini and Ancelotti, with whom I get along really well. I’m not in football to make friends, only to triumph.” Ronaldo said, quoted by the Spanish publication AS.

Cristiano Ronaldo has always spoken of his respect for Ferguson and he has on more than one occasion quoted the Scot as his father in football.

The 72-year-old United legend signed Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2003 for a reported £12 million fee and thus made him the first Portuguese player to represent the Red Devils.

Under Ferguson’s guidance, the now-29-year-old went on to become one of the best players ever to grace the Old Trafford pitch, scoring 84 Premier League goals in 196 top-flight appearances before sealing a then-record £80 million move to Real Madrid.

Of his five-year spell in the Spanish capital, three of those were spent with current Chelsea boss and Portuguese compatriot Jose Mourinho.

Despite personal success, Ronaldo went on to admit to there being a bad atmosphere around the club during Mourinho’s tenure and hinted at why a friendship with the Blues’ coach would have been difficult.

“There was a complicated moment, in terms of personal relationships and with the club," the player said. "There were situations with other players and also with the fans.”
