VIDEO: £16m Arsenal target scores header ahead of potential transfer

Sokratis Papastathopoulos - Greece

Sokratis Papastathopoulos looks set to be on his way to Arsenal, but he scored last night for current club Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal have been looking for a new defender ever since selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, as Arsene Wenger is currently short of options at centre-back after the departure of the club captain to the Catalan giants with support wanted for his defensive trio of Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and new signing Callum Chambers.

This week attention has turned to the Greek international Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The Borussia Dortmund star's agent reportedly held talks with Arsenal this week as the club tried to agree a fee with Dortmund for his services.

It is believed an initial bid of around £12 million was rejected for the player, but they are set to return with a £16 million move before Monday. Arsenal are growing increasingly confident of completing this deal before the transfer window shuts, as Dortmund have the likes of Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels regaining fitness, whilst Mathias Ginter also arrived this summer from SC Freiburg.

And last night he demonstrated a part of his game Arsenal might not be signing him for, but where he can certainly be useful.

He bagged Dortmund's second goal in their 3-2 win over Augsburg last night, although he certainly looked defensively suspect in the other half of the field.

But at least he showed Wenger and co what he might bring, should he find himself up the pitch for set-plays.

Would Papastathopoulos be a good signing for Arsenal?
