Aston Villa notched up their second win in three games this season after seeing off Hull City in a 2-1 win at Villa Park.

Paul Lambert's side struggled last season and were expected to fare similarly this time, but it's been a case of so far, so good after beating Stoke City 1-0 on the opening day before a 0-0 draw with Newcastle United last weekend. Today, they welcomed Hull City to Villa Park as they looked to bounce back from a shock home defeat to Leyton Orient in the Capital One Cup in midweek.

Villa got the game off to a perfect start as Gabriel Agbonlahor put Villa ahead after 14 minutes, and fellow forward Andreas Weimann made it two just over 20 minutes later - proving that Villa can still pose a threat in front of goal even with Christian Benteke still out injured.

It looked like being another tough day for Hull having failed to qualify for the Europa League group stages against Belgian outfit Lokeren on Thursday, and at half time the game looked over at 2-0, with Hull struggling to get a foot hold in the game.

However, Croatian international striker Nikica Jelavic pulled one back for the Tigers as he headed home Robbie Brady's free kick. From then on, Steve Bruce's side went for the leveller, and whilst Brad Guzan made a good save from Jake Livermore, Villa held on for all three points.

The results takes Villa up to third at this early stage of the season, whilst Hull are down to ninth, but with Abel Hernandez poised to arrive at the KC Stadium and no distractions from the Europa League, Hull should be picking up more wins in the coming weeks.
