Eric Dier reveals contact with £16m Manchester United newbie Rojo

Marcos Rojo - Portugal Vs Argentina, 9th February 2011

Eric Dier has spoken about texting Marcos Rojo about the difference between Portuguese and English football.

Two summer recruits, both defenders, both signed from Sporting Lisbon - but both have had very different starts to life in English football.

Eric Dier and Marcos Rojo both left Sporting for the Premier League this summer. Dier joined Spurs for a fee in the region of £4 million while Rojo moved to Manchester united for a whopping four times that amount, at £16 million.

But it is the cheaper option who has had the better start. Dier has started both of Spurs' opening Premier League games, and even managed to grab two goals, including the winner against West Ham on the opening day.

Rojo has however has had to watch football. He is having problems receiving a Work Permit to play in the UK and has been in Spain the last three days trying to obtain a visa to finalise his switch to Manchester. He has been at the Argentine embassy in Madrid as their is reportedly a police case open against him in Argentina, despite the fact he was never actually charged.

So despite being presented as an official Manchester United player as of this moment Rojo remains ineligible for the club. With the international break he should now have plenty of time to finally get the necessary papers to play in the UK.

But Dier and Rojo got to know each other whilst in the Sporting first-team together, and Dier has revealed the two have been in touch since making their respective moves. The Tottenham newbie stated:

"It’s a massive step-up. It’s a completely different world, to be honest. I was texting Rojo the other day at United because we were at Sporting together and he said the same things. It’s a different world and it is in every way. Every game is competitive, every game the stadium is full, home and away. Really competitive games, there are loads of great players: Tottenham has great players, Liverpool, Manchester United, it’s full of superstars.”

Rojo will now hope to return after international duty with Argentina eligible to play, and will also hope to fly off the blocks like his former team-mate has in North London.

Will Rojo have as big an impact as Dier?
