One goal and four scoring attempts in 20 minutes - Welcome back Zaha

Wilfried Zaha Clear1

Wilfried Zaha scored on his return to Crystal Palace, leaving Manchester United fans wondering what might have been.

When Wilfried Zaha arrived at Manchester United in a £15million deal in the summer of 2013, it was expected to be the start of something very exciting for both the player and his new club.

Talk - which in hindsight was rather premature - was of United signing a winger who could follow in the footsteps of a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

And yet despite shining during his first pre-season with David Moyes' side, things went sour from there on, with Zaha failing to break into the first-team and ultimately spending the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff City.

The England international could not help the Bluebirds remain in the top flight, but it appears he could play a huge role for a club he knows very well.

Zaha wasted no time making an impact following his return to Palace on loan, scoring the equalising goal in a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United and inspiring his old (and new) teammates in a 20-minute cameo performance.

In that time Zaha managed four scoring attempts, three of which were on target. He also touched the ball 21 times and had a pass-accuracy of 71.43%.

Not bad for someone who had rarely featured for United in pre-season and who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes.

There is a long way to go before we can hail Zaha as the player he was once tipped to become.  For now it is surely a matter of simply enjoying his football again.

But it appears a return to the club where he made his name will be good for him.  It could also get the attention of Louis van Gaal, who perhaps too swiftly deemed him surplus to requirements for a side desperate for his spontaneity and talent.

What do you expect from Zaha at Palace this season?
