Tottenham Hotspur were flying high after their back-to-back wins in the Premier League and progress to the Europa League group stage, but they were brought back to earth on Sunday.
Goals from Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard (penalty) and Alberto Moreno saw Liverpool pick up all three points, as the Tottenham players failed to rise to the occasion.
One player who did try but fail was Erik Lamela. The Argentina international winger has made a strong start to the 2014-15 season and was Spurs’ star player last weekend in their 4-0 home win against Queens Park Rangers, but on Sunday the 22-year-old struggled to make an impact.
Playing more centrally against Liverpool, Lamela tried to make things happen especially in the second half, but the former River Plate youngster just could not do it.
After the match, Tottenham fans took to social networking site Twitter to have their say on the performance of Lamela, who joined the North London club from AS Roma for a reported transfer fee of £30 million last summer.
Below is a selection of the Spurs supporters’ tweets. We have also included tweets from other clubs’ fans to gauge their reaction to Lamela’s display.
Time to call it a day with #Lamela. We aren't a club that can afford part-time luxuries who do virtually nothing with or without the ball— Vinny Person (@OhVinoir) August 31, 2014
what is so good about #lamela he's overrated— Nizam Highbury (@NizamZorro) August 31, 2014
