BBC football expert delivers Arsenal transfer news update

Arsenal Emirates

David Ornstein, BBC Sport's resident transfer news expert on deadline day, says Arsenal are unlikely to sign anyone, but there could be "late surprise".

Despite links claiming Arsene Wenger could pull off a deadline day swoop for a player who would bolster a key position at Arsenal, such as Aston Villa stopper Ron Vlaar (above, slide-tackling Tottenham Hotspur man Paulinho); Sporting Lisbon's emergent sensation William Carvalho or prolific net-busting striker Radamel Falcao, the Emirates Stadium side "are unlikely" to be active on the final day of the summer market.

That is the view of David Ornstein, resident transfer expert at BBC Sport, who believes that Wenger - who has traveled to Roma today in order to attend a charity football match - has already concluded his market plans having already acquired Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina.

The news will no doubt disappoint Gunners fans who long for a significant purchase on a day where Falcao looks set to sign for Manchester United and when Chelsea can relax having already signed a brace of players already performing exquisitely in the Premier League in Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa.

Ornstein confirmed: "Arsenal are very unlikely to sign anyone before deadline [this evening]. Barring a late surprise and a couple of squad exits, Arsenal's business is done."

Arsenal have already seen Bacary Sagna depart the club on a Bosman deal, ratified the £12.5 million sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona and allowed Johan Djourou join Hamburg for £2.5 million, but Lukas Podolski has also long been linked with an Emirates Stadium exit.

In the last fortnight, Galatasaray and Juventus are just two European bigs who have reportedly expressed interest in the World Cup winner.

Arsenal have also been linked with moves for Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Edinson Cavani, Danny Welbeck, Cheick Tiote and Toby Alderweireld.
