Arsenal and Spurs to do battle over Matija Nastasic - report

Man City Etihad

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic and could make a move before close of play today.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotpsur have both reportedly made an enquiry to Manchester City about the availability of Matija Nastasic.

The centre-back has emerged as a potential transfer target for the North-London duo, who are determined to add to their squads before the close of play today.

Arsenal and Spurs are both expected to bring in new recruits before the 11pm deadline, in what looks set to be a busy day in the capital.

One of these potential additions appears that it could be Nastasic, with the Guardian suggesting that City could be keen to cash-in on him to raise some funds in their battle to balance the books.

The reigning Premier League champions have already struggled to fit in with UEFA’s financial fair play rules and, as a result, they have been keen to trim their squad this summer.

The likes of Jack Rodwell, Gareth Barry and Javi Garcia have all departed to Etihad during the course of the window so far, with Micah Richards and the aforementioned Nastasic set to join them today.

The Serbian defender is more likely to be allowed to leave for Spurs than Arsenal as City don’t see Mauricio Pochettino’s men as a threat to their title.

The young centre-back, who was very highly regarded when he first broke through at City, would also be more likely to receive regular game time at White Hart Lane than if he was to join Arsenal.

The Gunners already have Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker forming a sturdy partnership at the heart of their defence, whilst Calum Chambers has proven himself to be adept back-up during his burgeoning Arsenal career so far.

As such, Spurs make sense as a choice if Nastasic is keen on regular play.

Although it is no guarantee of first team football, displacing Spurs’ current backline looks a far easier task.

Pochettino has already brought in Federico Fazio last week, as he looks to strengthen his defence, but it seems as if he hasn’t finished buying yet.

City are holding out to receive most of the £12 million that they paid for Nastasic back in 2012 and could plough any of the income from his departure back into signing sought-after striker Falcao.

Would Nastasic be better off moving to Spurs or Arsenal?
