The versatile defender can play on the right hand side of central defence or as a right-back and Fiorentina have moved to seal his transfer on a loan deal until the end of the season.
Reports suggest that the deal could be made permanent this time next year, but it’s encouraging to see him heading to a club where he’s likely to get more football than would be the case at Manchester City.
Richards has been linked with various Premier League teams throughout the summer with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all linked with him at various points.
However, his history of injury problems seems to have put the English sides off from going after moves for the defender, which has forced him into looking abroad for more regular football.
It’s unfortunate for Richards that City have been so successful while he’s been out of action and in the treatment room.
On the one hand, it’s positive the club have tasted but success, but on the other hand, Richards didn’t playing a starring role in the Premier League title success of last season.
City fought hard to keep him which is a tribute to his potential and the belief that Manuel Pellegrini has in his ability.
City offered him renewed terms last April, which included a pay rise on his current salary but he rejected the offer, seemingly keen to head somewhere he’s going to be more certain of regular first team action.
He can’t be blamed for that and he should maintain a positive relationship with City fans as he’s not joining a Premier League rival where he can directly hurt the current champions.
Here’s what Manchester City fans have had to say about his exit.
Sad to see Richards leaving but wish him the best. If he had more luck with injuries he would be number 1 RB in England, hope he gets games.— Mike Sands (@MikeTSands) September 1, 2014
Michael Richard heading to Florentina, good move for both parties!— Lee Rushe (@Leerushe) September 1, 2014
Good for Micah Richards, making the sort of brave move Hodgson was talking about. Not many black players fancy the home of football racism.— Matthew McKeown (@Matistuta87) September 1, 2014

Happy to see #MicahRichards 'dipping his toes into water' - he's now a Fiorentina player. More British players should make the switch abroad— Collins Banks Ajayi (@Mr_NOCSY) September 1, 2014
It'll be a good move for Micah Richards if he goes to Fiorentina. #micahrichards— Alex Kirkham (@alexkirkham1) September 1, 2014
