Midfielder has decided his destination - but Manchester United have other ideas

Tom Cleverley

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has reported decided he wants to join Everton on loan - but United want him to join Aston Villa.

United are set for a frantic deadline day, with a loan deal for Radamel Falcao reportedly in the offing as Monaco look to let the Colombian international hitman leave the club for a year, whilst a permanent move for Daley Blind should be completed today after Ajax accepted a £14m offer from the Red Devils.

Whilst incomings will be the priority as United look to turn around their poor start to the season, but new manager Louis van Gaal must also attempt to shift some bodies out of the club, with Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck both lined up for loan exits to Real Madrid and Tottenham respectively.

Another player who could be leaving the club is midfielder Tom Cleverley, who became something of a scapegoat for the club under David Moyes last season. The 24-year-old midfielder turned in a number of poor performances for United last season, and whilst he believed that he was perfect to play in van Gaal's system and style of football, this season hasn't been any better for Cleverley, particularly after his abject display against Sunderland a week ago.

Whilst rumours had suggested that United were looking to offer Cleverley a new contract to stay at Old Trafford, they received and accepted an £8m bid from Premier League rivals Aston Villa late last week, and La Liga side Valencia were also strongly linked with a move as Cleverley's departure grew closer and closer.

Yet today, there has been something of a twist. It's now being reported that Cleverley does indeed want to leave United - but only on loan to Everton, as he believes he can still have a future at Old Trafford in a year's time. Cleverley impressed during a loan spell at Wigan under Roberto Martinez during the 2010/11 season, and now with the Spaniard in charge at Goodison Park, Cleverley is hoping for a reunion.

That doesn't quite fit in with what United want, though. Rather than loan out another player - as they have Nani and Wilfried Zaha - United want Cleverley to go permanently to Aston Villa, giving van Gaal money to spend on a new midfielder, which could be AC MIlan's Nigel de Jong.

The situation is expected to develop throughout the day, but right now, there's a disagreement between player and club over what the best move is.
