Former Liverpool MD: Falcao to United deal is like Torres' Chelsea switch

Radamel Falcao

Christian Purslow believes Manchester United's signing of Radamel Falcao is like Chelsea's move for Fernando Torres in 2011.

Manchester United have completed the deal of deadline day by bringing in Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco on a season long loan deal. The Colombian hit-man has arrived as United moved Javier Hernandez on to Real Madrid on a similar deal.

It is a deal that has received different reactions from across the footballing world. Some believe it is a steal, others cannot believe that the club have not instead moved in to sign a centre-back at the club.

One person who had an interesting view was Christian Purslow. The former managing director of Liverpool FC was at the club from 2009 until 2010, and he has compared the signing to a deal involving a player who was at Liverpool when he was - Fernando Torres.

Speaking to Sky Sports News Purslow stated:

"I really like it I think it makes sense. It reminds me a little bit of the Torres situation to Chelsea and I think Manchester United might have learnt that lesson. Another Atletico Madrid legend, 28-years-old, coming off the back of a World Cup that, in this case, he missed. I think Manchester United are saying the kind of price, £50-£60 million to buy this player, who is coming back from a cruciate injury, it probably makes sense to have a look for a year...

"The other thing that caught my eye is they are obviously deciding it is about goals. Look at Liverpool last year. Scored well over a hundred goals. Let 50 in but were comfortably second in the league. I think Manchester United are saying 'we need goals' and this guy is a proven goal-scorer."

You can see where the comparisons have come from. Torres himself had struggled with the odd injury and dip in form before Chelsea spent £50 million on him. So it is perhaps wise that Manchester United have decided to only bring him in on loan for now.

But regardless of that, United fans will certainly hope his time at Manchester United is far more prolific than that of Torres at Chelsea.

Will Falcao be more effective than Torres?
