Spurs favourites to land Welbeck after Newcastle exit race - report

St James Park

Newcastle United have ended their interest in Danny Welbeck, leaving Tottenham Hotspur as heavy favourites to sign the Manchester United man.

Newcastle United have pulled out of the race to sign Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck, according to a report in the Chronicle.

The United forward has been made available for loan this summer and was reportedly close to a move to the North-East, but any deal between the two clubs is now off.

It is thought that the Magpies have balked at United’s £5 million demands to take the 23-year-old on loan for a season.

It leaves Tottenham Hotspur as the firm favourites to sign Welbeck, although Sunderland and Hull have supposedly been interested previously.

United were understood to be keen not to relinquish their own youth product to a top six rival, but their imminent signing of Radamel Falcao may make Welbeck’s departure a necessity.

He is unlikely to feature at Old Trafford this season and keeping him around the club would likely limit his devlopemnt more than sending him out to get regular first-team football.

Although Welbeck would improve the quality of Spurs’ team – giving them competition for a spot down the left-wing and up-front – United will likely back themselves to have enough firepower to get them back into the top four.

Falcao’s expected arrival will mean they will have a front-line capable of competing with any team's in world football and Welbeck’s loss is unlikely to be felt too heavily.

That said, there is a section of United’s support who can see his value to the squad – as a versatile player – and they are disappointed to see a young, English prospect leave.

Welbeck trained with the England squad earlier this morning, but could make a transfer if a deal is rushed through before the close of play at 11:00pm tonight with White Hart Lane now the likely destination.

Should Welbeck be allowed to leave Old Trafford?
