On this day: £85.3m deal done, £42.5m Arsenal talks begin and £3.5m Chelsea signing

Bale Real Madrid

On the 1st August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 1st August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 1st August 2013…

Bale-d out

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed they had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for their forward Gareth Bale.

In what was a world record breaking deal Bale arrived at Real for a fee believed to be in the region of £85.3 million.

Tottenham struggled to replace their star man last term with many of their new signings flopping, while Bale won the Champions League.

Real sending Mes-out

It was late last night this time last year that Arsenal entered advanced talks with Real Madrid for the purchase of Germany international Mesut Ozil. Manchester United have previously been linked, but Ozil told the press a week earlier that he had no intention to leave Real last summer.

But after Real had signed Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur it seemed as though a move for Ozil could be likely.

Bale's arrival suggested that Ozil could be forced out of the club, and he certainly was. Arsenal snapped up the talented playmaker for £42.5 million the day after, on Transfer Deadline Day. A year on and it is Deadline Day again - will Arsenal make a big signing again?

Ats-who?

Chelsea completed the signature of Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu. The talented player left Porto, joining Chelsea for £3.5m.

But he has not yet played for Chelsea despite joining a year ago. He was loaned to Vitesse Arnhem last summer, immediately after joining Chelsea. This summer he impressed for the Black Stars at the World Cup so moved to Everton for this term.

Has Ozil had a good year at Arsenal?
