Radamel Falcao’s impending move to Manchester United on a one-year loan deal from AS Monaco has left Liverpool legend Phil Thompson surprised.
The 60-year-old former England international defender questions why the Colombian striker would join a club who are not in the Champions League when he could have moved to Arsenal.
‘I think people will be shocked because Manchester United are not playing in any European competition whatsoever’, he told Sky Sports. ‘So why would a player who is a top-class player choosing them? But I get that. This is Manchester United and Manchester United don’t need to sell themselves. They are a huge club...
‘I am surprised that he has picked Manchester United, surprised because of Arsenal. Surely Arsenal would have been wanting him’.
Thompson seems surprised that Falcao has decided to join up with Louis van Gaal’s side instead of moving to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, but he should not be.
After all, Falcao – easily one of the top three strikers in the world when fit – joined Monaco last summer when the French club had just gained promotion to Ligue 1.
At the time, the Colombia international’s decision to leave Atletico Madrid – a team that went on to reach the Champions League final in May and won La Liga – was questioned. He could have remained with Atletico or moved to a bigger club with Champions League football.
Monaco paid Atletico €60 million as transfer fee for his services and put Falcao on a massive salary. Money did play a part in the former Porto star’s decision, but he was also sold the ‘Monaco project’.
But that Monaco project looked to have been disbanded following the sale of James Rodriguez to Real Madrid earlier this summer, and Falcao is on his way out as well.
Perhaps United manager Van Gaal has also sold the 28-year-old the rebuilding project that is current underway at Old Trafford, and that's why Falcao has decided to join England's biggest football club.
