Manchester United are close to sealing a deal to sign Radamel Falcao for €65 million, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
Falcao has been tipped with a move away from Monaco for much of the summer so far, but it seemed that the battle was between Manchester City, Arsenal and Real Madrid.
However, reports emerged last night that United were set to join the race for his signature and they appear to have acted swiftly the land the Colombian.
It is potentially a sensational swoop for Louis Van Gaal’s men, who have already had a hugely active transfer window so far.
The club have spent big on Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind already, but their spending is showing no signs of slowing deal.
The striker would be another marquee addition and an announcement of their intentions to break into the top four once again this season.
The side have looked short of quality – failing to win any of their first four competitive fixtures of the season so far – but Van Gaal could surely have no excuses not to make the Champions League qualification spaces if Falcao does join up.
The Monaco striker is one of the most highly coveted strikers in the world and his pace and power look a perfect fit for the Premier League.
Where the Colombian would fit in remains another question, with Robin Van Persie or Wayne Rooney likely to lose their spot upfront, but there can never be a problem with having too much quality.
The 28-year-old has been unbelieveable profilfic for a number of seasons now with Porto and Atletico although his form did drop off slightly in Ligue 1.
The striker scored 11 goals in 20 games in France’s top flight last year, but now wants a new challenge and he would certainly find that at Old Trafford.
He could still be joined by Arturo Vidal today, too, who United are still hopeful of singing in a transfer window which may define the club’s near future.
