Tottenham Hotspur fans react on Twitter to Lewis Holtby exit - 'Just got rid of one of our best players!'

Lewis Holtby has headed back to the Bundesliga on a loan deal with Hamburg until the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby has headed to Hamburg on loan for the rest of the season.

The versatile young midfielder flew to Germany earlier today to put the final touches to his return to his homeland after failing to convince Mauricio Pochettino he should stay at White Hart Lane.

Holtby is capable of playing a variety of roles in the Spurs midfield but unfortunately for the player, central midfield isn’t a position where Tottenham are short of bodies at the moment.

The move should do Holtby good because he knows the Bundesliga from his days with Schalke before he joined Spurs and it will provide him with the chance to start more games than would have been the case in North London.

Had he stayed at Spurs there would have been no guarantees that he’d get into the side ahead of Etienne Capoue, Nabil Bentaleb, Christian Eriksen and several others so it’s a move which makes sense on all sides.

Former Spurs midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart recently said that he’d be delighted to see Holtby playing his football at Hamburg as the side look to recover from an opening day thumping in the German league, where they lost 3-0 at the hands of Paderborn.

Holtby’s Tottenham contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2018, which means Spurs don’t have to sell and can benefit from getting a potentially better player back at the end of this season.

Hamburg could make a play at the end of the campaign to try and tie him down on a permanent deal but that’s doubtful considering their recent economic problems and the fact Holtby has admitted that he wants the chance again in the future to be able to succeed at Tottenham.

Here’s what Tottenham Hotspur fans have had to say about his exit via social media site Twitter.

Do you think some time away from Spurs will do Holtby good?
