1 goal, 12 clearances, 7 tackles: Is Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno worth the hype?

Alberto Moreno Perez

Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno has been earning praise from some of the club’s legends for his performances this season.

Alberto Moreno’s introduction to the Premier League did not go well, as Liverpool were at the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against Manchester City.

In fact, it was the left-back’s mistake four minutes before the half-time interval at the Etihad Stadium that handed the defending English champions the initiative.

Moreno failed to clear the ball as he hesitated when fellow defender Dejan Lovren tried to find him with a header inside the Reds’ penalty box, and Stevan Jovetic slammed it home.

It was City’s opening goal of the match, and they scored two more to secure a pretty comfortable 3-1 victory.

Although Moreno’s overall performance was not bad – he had a 90% pass accuracy rate – and Brazilian legend Cafu defended the 22-year-old (click here to read more), his involvement in the Citizens’ first goal could not be ignored.

However, on Sunday there was no sign of any residual frustrations or nerves from Moreno, who was one of the best players on the pitch at White Hart Lane.

Quick, incisive and showing intelligence, Moreno looked a real threat going forward down the left-hand side and did his defensive duties marvellously against Tottenham Hotspur.

The youngster's pace and strength allowed him to get the better of his opponents, and he was duly rewarded with a great individual goal on the hour mark.

Moreno’s truly brilliant performance against Tottenham drew praise from many football followers, including Liverpool legends John Aldridge and Jamie Carragher.

It might be premature to go gaga over a player who has played just two league matches for a team, but Moreno does indeed look the ‘real thing’.

Last season the Spain international enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Sevilla, and was a key figure in their Europa League triumph and fifth-place finish in La Liga.

Moreno is young and has a lot to learn, but given what he has achieved so far in his career, there is every reason to feel confident that the £12 million summer signing will fulfil his potential.

Could Alberto Moreno become a Liverpool legend?
