Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Benjamin Stambouli from Montpellier on Monday for a reported £4.7million.
While it may not have been the headline signing many Spurs fans were hoping for, he is a fine player who will add quality and depth to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
In the latest in our series on the numbers behind a player’s career to date, we take a closer look at the new Tottenham arrival.
1 – The number of major club honours Stambouli has won in his career to date. The 24-year-old was part of the Montpellier side that won the Ligue title in 2012.
129 – The number of club appearances the new Tottenham signing has made. He has played his entire professional career at Montpellier, where he originally came through the youth ranks.
4 – The number of goals he has scored so far. The defensive midfielder has not been signed for his prowess in front of goal, but he has still netted on four occasions, so there is a goal or two in him, just do not expect many.
5 – The number of assists Stambouli has provided to date. Again, creativity is not his strong suit but he can carve out a chance on occasions – a fine and handy trait for a more defensive-minded player to have.
2 – The number of times the Spurs new boy has been sent off in his career. Given his position on the pitch and the fact that he has played over 100 games, his disciplinary record is impressive, especially when you consider that he has only racked up 13 yellow cards in that time.
14 – The number of times Stambouli has been capped at France under-21 level. He is yet to win a senior cap, but could his move to White Hart Lane change that?
Verdict – Stambouli is a composed player whose history of playing in the back-four is clearly reflected in his defensive-midfield play. He is also able to set attacks in motion swiftly and the likes of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela are set to benefit from his ability and vision.
For the money Tottenham reportedly paid for the player, it is a bargain in a summer when inflated fees were seemingly everywhere.
