Arsenal's lucky escape as £24m man injured one day after transfer deadline?

Sami Khedira warming up

Arsenal were linked with Sami Khedira all summer, but did they have a lucky escape?

Arsenal may have had a lucky escape regarding Sami Khedira and his injury record, after he suffered another setback.

The Gunners were linked with the Real Madrid star all summer as they sought to add a defensive midfielder to their squad, settling in the end on Calum Chambers' versatility.

Real Madrid announced Khedira would remain with the club ahead of the deadline, despite his contract being set to expire next summer.

Having bounced back from a cruciate knee ligament injury, Khedira needed a bit of luck this coming campaign after also missing the World Cup Final after being injured in the warm-up.

Now as Germany prepare to face Argentina in a midweek friendly which is a re-match of July's final in Brazil, Khedira has suffered another injury setback.

The Associated Press report that Khedira has suffered a muscle tear in his left thigh during training for the match, and has been forced to withdraw from the squad.

Khedira is now expected to miss several games as he attempts again to recover to full fitness, with Marca reporting he will be out for a minimum of six weeks.. Much to Madrid's frustration, it was on international duty where he suffered his knee injury last season.

With Arsenal already having a number of players on the treatment table, Khedira may just be one player the club had a lucky escape with.

The midfielder has been best by bad fortune over the past 18 months, and his latest injury is an illustration of that.

Had the Gunners secured him during the final days of the transfer window, only to see him go down with an injury, the reaction would have been an outpouring of frustration from supporters, as it was with Kim Kallstrom on February.

Khedira is a more accomplished player and the defensive midfield position is still one in which Arsenal need to strengthen, but perhaps with regard to the Real Madrid man they were right not to pursue his signature, and their main error is simply not actually signing an alternative.

What do you think of Khedira going down injured again? Did Arsenal have a lucky escape?
