Championship Team of the Week: Matchday Five

Leeds United Crest

Leeds United, Watford and Wigan Athletic stars dominated matchday five of Championship action.

GK - Marco Silvestri - Leeds United

The young Italian made eight saves and claimed four crosses to keep a clean sheet in the Whites victory over Bolton. Despite Bolton dominating the game, they failed to score with any of their 22 total shots, with Silvestri showing his agility and claiming the man of the match award for a match winning performance.

RB - Simon Francis - AFC Bournemouth

29-year old Francis controlled the game from the right-back position, having a game high 95 touches of the ball. His one successful key pass assisted the equalising goal, and he also won two tackles and completed three effective clearances to fulfil his primary defensive duties.

CB - Lewis Dunk - Brighton and Hove Albion

Was part of the defence that conceded twice to Charlton, but also managed to score two goals - including an injury time equaliser - to tie the game. In defence he won four interceptions and completed four effective clearances, but it was his attacking intent that drew the plaudits, with the 22-year old’s two shots on target both finding the back of the net.

CB - Emmerson Boyce - Wigan Athletic

Was central to Wigan keeping a clean sheet in their victory over Birmingham, winning four tackles and two interceptions. Also won four aerial duals and completed 11 effective clearances as the Latics recorded their second successive Championship shut-out.

LB - Stephen Warnock - Leeds United

Featured for just 55 minutes due to injury, but still managed to net the winning goal against Bolton. The former Liverpool and England man displayed his usual experience and work ethic, and was repaid with a cross-cum-shot that rolled across the box and into the far post. However, the ageing full-back’s game was ended prematurely through injury, leaving the Whites to struggle to a 1-0 victory.

RM - Tommaso Bianchi - Leeds United

New signing Bianchi controlled Leeds in their 1-0 victory, displaying a keen defensive performance from the midfield, whilst also linking up play across the transitional phase. He won four tackles and four interceptions, whilst also completing five effective clearances, as well as playing 68 passes with an accuracy of 88%. His passing stats were the highest amongst his teammates, and his 93 touches dwarfed every other Whites player.

CM - Almen Abdi - Watford

The standout performer of the weekend, 27-year old Swiss international Abdi scored twice and recorded an assist in Watford’s 4-2 victory over Huddersfield. The attacking midfielder netted the Hornets second goal of the game, before taking the corner that led to the third, and then killing the game off with the fourth in injury time. He also won four tackles as the midfield worked on their defensive game to overcome the limitation of 10 men following Gabriel Tamas’s dismissal.

CM - Daniel Tozser - Watford

Abdi’s midfield partner, Hungarian international Tozser, played a part in two of the Hornets goals, including assisting the opening strike for Troy Deeney, before playing in Abdi to net the fourth. His two assists came from four key passes, and his 58 total passes was a game high, as the 29-year-old controlled the game from a deep-lying midfield position.

LM - Andrew Taylor - Wigan Athletic

Playing on the left of Wigan’s five-man midfield, Taylor played three key passes and completed two successful dribbles before scoring with his only shot on target. Despite not influencing the game from a defensive standpoint, the former Cardiff man's attacking ability shone to the fore in the 4-0 victory over Birmingham.

ST - Igor Vetokele - Charlton Atheltic

Netted both goals in Charlton’s 2-2 draw with Brighton, 22-year old Vetokele struggled to impact the game in any way other than his scoring. Failing to build the link-up play or provide any defensive contribution, it was the Angolan’s finishing ability that made him standout over the weekend. He totaled just two overall shots, but he netted both of them to win Charlton a point and keep them in play-off contention.

ST - Callum McManaman - Wigan Athletic

23-year old McManaman was the main attacking outlet for Wigan in their 4-0 destruction of Birmingham, netting twice and laying on chances for his teammates with ease. Despite failing to record an assist, his two key passes set up good chances, and he completed four successful dribbles to create openings for the Latics. Wigan have been struggling with scoring goals so far this season, but if McManaman continues to impress he may be the answer to their problem.
