Michael Owen reacts to Danny Welbeck to Arsenal transfer news

Danny Welbeck swapped Manchester United for Arsenal on deadline day… and Owen has praised the Gunners's capture.

Arsenal announced the completion of their fifth transfer of the summer market earlier this morning, Monday, as former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck agreed terms on a four year deal with a view to a fifth year.

The move has been praised by former England international and current pundit Michael Owen, who believes he is the ideal type of player for Arsene Wenger to work with - and improve.

"Arsenal have pulled off a very good signing in Welbeck," said Owen. "He's young, English, fast and someone who Wenger can get more out of."

Detractors may argue that if the 23-year-old is not good enough to convince manager Louis van Gaal he is worthy of a first-team place at Old Trafford, then how can he make the grade at the Gunners, however, Welbeck has only seldom featured in his preferred centre forward role and it stands to logic that he will return more goals when fielded up front.

Receiving irregular first-team football also failed to perturb Real Madrid from snapping up the services of Javier Hernandez - and the Spanish press commended Los Blancos for finally acquiring the true number nine that the squad obviously needed, even if the player would play deputy to Karim Benzema as a deluxe sub.

Owen continued: "People talk about a lack of goals but Welbeck has hardly played as a striker at United.

"He will suit Arsenal," he concluded.
