MLS team of the week: Landon Donovan continues fine run of form

Landon Donovan LA

Soon-to-retire Landon Donovan showed why he remains one of the leading stars in MLS this past week, helping the LA Galaxy to maximum points from their two games.

GK – Bill Hamid (D.C. United)

Put in perhaps the best goalkeeping performance of the season so far to help United to a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls, doing his bid for a future return to the national team no harm at all.

RB – Alvas Powell (Portland Timbers)

The Jamaican opened the scoring in his side’s 3-0 win over Vancouver, and was a menace on the right-flank until being subbed off with 15 minutes to go.

CB – Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy)

The US international scored in LA’s 4-1 midweek win at home to D.C. United, before putting in another assured performance in Sunday’s convincing 3-0 victory over rivals Chivas USA.

CB – David Horst (Houston Dynamo)

Houston had a tough matchup on the road to Sporting KC this weekend but, thanks to both Horst’s solid defensive performance and crucial second goal, the visitors managed to secure a 3-1 upset win.

LB – Krzysztof Krol (Montreal Impact)

The Polish left-back was the standout performer on a Montreal defence which shutout Columbus to claim a 2-0 win – just his side’s fifth of the season.

RM – Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers)

Nagbe has had a quiet season production-wise but several moments of brilliance in the win over Vancouver, as well as a neat assist for the third goal, showed that fans shouldn’t be down on his potential.

CM – Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution)

New England’s midfield talisman was the driving force behind his side’s 3-0 win over Toronto, grabbing a goal and assist to further establish himself as a dark horse MVP candidate.

CM – Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo)

The king of assists notched up another two on the weekend to help dispatch KC, as Houston start their bid for a late post-season run.

LM – Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

Donovan’s outstanding retirement tour continues. The MLS legend grabbed a goal and two assists in the win over D.C. United, before bagging another two assists on the weekend against Chivas. It’s now four goals and eight assists from the past eight games for him.

AM – Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact)

The Argentine midfielder netted a brace in just his third start since signing as a DP from Copa Libertadores champions San Lorenzo last month, with his performance in that win over Columbus suggesting big things are in store.

ST – Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

While Donovan was the Galaxy’s star performer of the week, Zardes certainly deserves some plaudits too. A brace against Chivas means he now has 12 goals on the season so far – the most for any American in MLS.
