Peter Schmeichel questions Manchester United’s Radamel Falcao move

The former Manchester United goalkeeper speaks on Louis van Gaal's first transfer window at the club.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel is excited at the prospect of watching new signing Radamel Falcao strut his stuff at Old Trafford, but is unsure of whether the club really needed another striker.

The Red Devils' signing of the Colombian frontman was undoubtedly the biggest deal of transfer deadline day, but Schmeichel believes that manager Louis van Gaal may have been better off spending his money elsewhere.

"I think he's done really good business. I think he's brought in some exciting players and I think a lot of the fans will be excited about watching a player like Falcao at Old Trafford," Schmeichel told Sky Sports News HQ.

"It's great to have a player of that quality coming in but I don't think that's where we needed players most. We have got fantastic players up front as it is, we've got Wayne [Rooney] there, we've got Robin [van Persie] there.

"But it is great, the signal that sends to the rest of the footballing world, that a player of that caliber chose Manchester United."

The Falcao deal is clearly an important one for United, as it shows that the club can still attract the biggest names in world football even without the promise of Champions League football.

The Red Devils will not compete in Europe this season after the disastrous 2013/14 campaign under David Moyes, and with just two points from their opening three games this term Van Gaal's men have not looked like a side capable of challenging for the top four.

The Colombian's arrival, however, means that United now clearly have the most formidable frontline in the Premier League and could be the difference between a title challenge and settling for the Europa League or less.

The deal went down to the wire and could only go through after the club applied for a two-hour extension from the Premier League to conclude the transfer.

After years of seeing the club complete their transfer business before the start of the season under Sir Alex Ferguson, Schmeichel was unimpressed by the last-minute nature of the Falcao deal.

"We needed to sign players, but I think in the space of 14-15 months we've gone from being a club that has been doing all its business prior to the break to doing it on the last day," he said.

"Hopefully this is just a one-off. Hopefully this is the way we're doing business this year and we'll go back to the Manchester United way."
