Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela’s inconsistency needs to be addressed

Erik Lamela

Erik Lamela has shown signs of promise this season, but the Tottenham Hotspur attacker needs to be more consistent.

Much is expected of Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela this season following a disappointing 2013-14 campaign that was prematurely curtained by a back injury.

Now fully fit and pumped up under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentina international attacker will have to play a key role for Spurs if they are to break into the top four of the Premier League this season.

Lamela has shown much more promise and is in better form than he was at the start of last season, but has suffered from inconsistency – something that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

The 22-year-old started Spurs’ opening league match of the season against West Ham United away from home, but failed to make an impact and was taken off just past the hour mark.

The former AS Roma star showed flashes of his brilliance in their 1-0 away win and was kept out of the starting line-up against AEL Limassol in the first leg of their Europa League playoff round in Cyprus.

However, Lamela came off the bench and created both goals in a 2-1 comeback victory for Tottenham and played a starring role against Queens Park Rangers at White Hart Lane in their 4-0 win in the next match.

Lamela, who joined Tottenham from Roma for a reported transfer fee of £30 million last summer, did not feature in the second leg against Limassol, but started against Liverpool at home in the Premier League on Sunday.

Once again, the former River Plate youngster failed to make an impact, but not because of lack of trying. Playing more centrally and attempting to make runs into the penalty box, Lamela did try to make things happen, especially in the second half, but he failed - as Liverpool went away with a convincing 3-0 win (click here to read more).

Of course, it has not even a month since the 2014-15 Premier League campaign began and reading too much into Lamela’s stats and form may not be wise, but it is always better to nip the evil in the bud.

The Argentine star has shown inconsistency in these early stages of the season, and the sooner he and Pochettino work on it the better for everyone.
