Danny Welbeck admits thinking about playing for Arsenal while at United

Emirates Sunshine

Danny Welbeck has been talking following his move from Manchester United to Arsenal.

Arsenal’s £16million signing Danny Welbeck has been interviewed for the first time as a Gunners player.

The former Manchester United forward moved to the Emirates Stadium on transfer deadline day, and while he is United born and bred, it is clear he is very happy with his move.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the England international said, “I’ve envisaged myself playing in this team before. For it to finally happen is very exciting.”

That may be a surprising statement from a player who grew up at United, but it appears Arsenal have signed a young player who has already bought into the Gunners’ philosophy and is keen to show what he can do.

It was clear his time was up at United when he was rarely used in Louis van Gaal’s opening three games and the Dutchman then moved for Radamel Falcao.

But many believe that if played consistently, Welbeck can blossom into a very effective front-man.

On Wenger’s style Welbeck said, “I believe the style of play the manager’s got and the boys play and with the magnificent players in midfield slotting the balls through, I can run on to the end of those balls and slot them away.”

Just a few seasons ago it seemed impossible that Welbeck would swap United for any other club, but having left he seems to accept that it was the right decision.

“Things move on in life and I think you’ve really got to make the right decision in the situation that you’re in at that moment in time,” Welbeck said. “I really do believe that coming to Arsenal is the right decision.”

A fine if sometimes erratic finisher, one suspects that over time Welbeck could become a vital part of this Arsenal side, and perhaps the final, unexpected piece of Wenger’s jigsaw.
