Chelsea's Costa signing prompted Milan move says Torres

Fernando Torres says that the arrival of Diego Costa at Chelsea forced him to leave the club and join AC Milan.

Fernando Torres has admitted that Chelsea’s signing of Diego Costa was the reason that he had to leave Stamford Bridge for AC Milan.

Torres, who was once a £50 million signing for the Blues, has slipped down the pecking order after struggling to find his top form at the London club and he says as soon as Costa came in he knew he would have to play a back-seat role.

Costa was signed by Jose Mourinho this summer for £32 million with the intention of him being the main-man at Chelsea and Torres said that he didn’t want to play second-fiddle.

“Obviously I could see what the season at Chelsea was going to be,” the 30-year-old striker said. “They signed a striker that was expecting to play and I need to have this feeling of being important."

“After all these years, however, I needed a change, something that would give me the desire to play, to feel important."

“AC Milan is all I needed, a great club with great fans where I will try to shine and come back myself. We need to return to the first three [in Serie A] and I want to get back my past levels.”

If he can rekindle the form which he has shown at his peak in England then Milan will have one of the best strikers in the world on their books, but it has been some time since Torres was seen in full-flow.

The Spaniard’s time at Chelsea can only be considered as unsuccessful and his 20 goal return in 110 appearances for the Blues is evidence of how badly he struggled.

Indeed, the arrival of Costa has given the team new found impetus in attacking sitations.

Costa has been hugely impressive during his first few appearances in England, scoring in every game he has played so far.

He is already on four goals for the campaign, after only playing three games - a tally it previously took Torres 39 games to reach - and it seems like a good upgrade by the club.
