Martin Keown says that he doesn’t know why Toni Kroos was not signed by Manchester United this summer.
The German midfielder became available after Bayern Munich decided to cash in on him, but United decided to pursue other interests and Kroos ended up at Real Madrid.
It was a decision which surprised Keown, who felt that Kroos’ passing ability could have offered the Red Devils a lot.
“I don’t know why Van Gaal didn’t want him [Toni Kroos],” Keown said to the Daily Mail. “He passes the ball so cleanly.”
Despite missing out on Kroos, United still had a transfer window which was simply staggering.
Louis Van Gaal’s men were in dire need of quality and they have clearly tried to buy in the improvements needed.
United outlayed £156 million in a summer of extravagance, as they desperately try and create the momentum needed to make a resurgence.
The side have started the new campaign poorly – failing to win any of their first four competitive fixtures – but there is optimism that a new look squad can fire them up the Premier League table and back into title contention.
Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Falcao were all brought in by Van Gaal as he looks to return United back to the top of the league.
The side slumped to a seventh placed finish last year but, even so, this summer is a drastic overhaul of that squad.
Four of the new additions are yet to make their debut, whilst Herrera and Di Maria have only made a solitary appearance for their new club so there is a hope that when the expensively assembled recruits are all starting together they can make an immediate improvement.
The first chance that United will have to show that they can do this will be on September 14th when they take on QPR at Old Trafford, where they will be desperate to kick-start their campaign.
Do United still need Kroos?
