Everton's Darron Gibson determined to perform after injury layoff

The former Manchester United midfielder is ready to make an impression after a spell on the sidelines.

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson is determined to grasp the opportunity to play for both his club and country after a 10-month injury layoff.

Gibson missed the majority of last season because of a knee injury and suggested he needs to prove himself as soon as he gets the chance to impress.

He's quoted by the Everton website: "Being out for 10 months last season gave me a lot of time to think about things, and I think this is now or never, really, to be honest with you, so I am looking forward to the task ahead.

“It just made me realise that I’m not getting any younger. I need to start playing games and I need to start doing well for myself. It’s a big opportunity for me.

“Being out for 10 months is tough. The hardest thing was going every week to Goodison and watching the lads, knowing I should have been playing and there was not really much I could do about it.

“It is very hard. You want to be playing and training every day. It takes a bit of getting used to, but after a couple of months, I got round the idea that it was a long-term injury and I just got my head down and focused on getting through it."

Gibson is going to find it difficult breaking into to the starting XI at Goodison Park on a regular basis this season given the partnership that James McCarthy and Gareth Barry formed in his absence. However, with the side entering European competition, the whole squad is likely to be put to the test this season and Gibson will make a contribution to the side.

In the past he has played in big Champions League matches for Manchester United, and that kind of experience could be valuable in this side.

Not a lot should be expected of Gibson immediately, however, as it can take a little while for any player to find anywhere near their best form after such a long spell on the sidelines.

How big a contribution can Gibson make for Everton this season?
