Pavoletti's Leeds snub gamble failed to pay off, now he is left with an uphill task

Cesena were linked with rivalling Leeds to sign Leonardo Pavoletti, and their club director says they are the reason the Sassuolo forward did not sign with the Championship side.

Leeds United reportedly failed in a late bid for striker Leonardo Pavoletti on deadline day, was it because he wanted a move to another club instead?

The Sassuolo striker was on loan at Serie B side Varese last season, scoring 24 goals in the division.

They were not the only ones interested, with Cesena linked with signing the forward.

Rino Foschi, Cesena technical director, told Tuttomercatoweb: "There was no agreement to conclude the signing of Pavoletti.

"Moreover, the striker rejected a foreign club because he wanted to come to Cesena but we have the main objective to safeguard our accounts."

Leeds were widely credited with being that club interested in the striker, with the Yorkshire Evening Post suggesting the same on transfer deadline day.

He clearly preferred to stay in Italy, but Cesena's financial prudence meant that route for him was blocked.

The 25-year-old has played just 10 minutes for Sassuolo this season so far in the Coppa Italia, and in turning down Leeds he may have turned down his best chance of regular football.

Leeds were reportedly the only side willing to offer cash for the striker, and it was for his own personal reasons he decided against a switch to England.

Sassuolo established themselves as a Serie A side last season, but Pavoletti has only ever played two games as a substitute in the division, a total of 44 minutes of action, and has no goals to his name.

With Italian scoring sensation Domenico Berardi, who scored four goals past AC Milan last season, in front of him, it will be tough to establish himself as first choice.

Leeds should have been an intriguing option for him, and if he struggles to find playing time this campaign, until January at least, he will only have himself to blame.

Who has missed out more, Leeds or Pavoletti?
